November 15, 2008. 17 years ago. The website known as "mezzacotta", run by The Comic Irregulars (David Morgan-Mar, manyhills, other really cool people), adds a new section onto their site. Square Root of Minus Garfield.

The very first comic, "Garfield in Haiku," by David McLeish

From this day on, many people around the world came to check out this wonderful site and contributed their own wacky Garfield edits of varying quality. As of this writing, we are now on comic 6024. Holy crap.

I first discovered this site one school afternoon in November 2021. I was bored and looking at Garfield stuff on my school laptop, and during that period of time, I discovered SROMG. I think this was the first comic I saw...

#4570: "Jon's Revenge" by U. N. Owen, quite the introduction

Over the course of many years now, this site became a personal fixation of mine and at this point I think I've read every strip. I became a lot more interested in this than I ever did in Garfield as a whole. I even contributed a few of them, but I won't show them here because they are godawful.

I also started checking out many other "mezzacotta" comics, including but not limited to, iToons (happy 1000!), which is just SROMG but with other comic characters, and Lightning Made of Owls, which is also just SROMG but with original characters. Lightning Made of Owls in particular was a bit of an inspiration for SRFF believe it or not. Dinosaur Whiteboard is also a delight.

Of course, there's also Irregular Webcomic!, a pretty funny comic by David Morgan-Mar featuring many different characters as LEGO figurines with different themes for each strip (the best one is Mythbusters nuff said). It started way way back in 2002 but it appears to just be reruns now sadly. It's funny, but I particularly enjoyed the stretch of time where the comic first "ended" and became just David rambling about things he likes for four years. Very irregular.

"Hey! There's comics on the internet!"
